HI AND WELCOME
My name is Sam and I am a textile artist and crafty creator based in the South East of England. Drawing With Stitches is my way of combining two of my loves – drawing and sewing – by using the stitch as another form of mark making, and (when they are not just pure stitch on white cotton) textiles as the palette.
After years of using both disciplines seperately, and trying to appease all the creative urges by switching between the two, often leaving the drawing side unsatisfied by being merely a starting point in the creative process, I decided to try and combine the two. This began with hand-stitching into my drawings, on paper…..then moved onto sewing into the drawings with a sewing machine – still on various papers and collages…… until, eventually, I began to sew the drawings completely as the final mark with the machine -swapping paper for various fabrics, as the base, then also as the pallette.
My first exhibition Drawing With Stitches, was a huge success, which completely blew me away, as I had no idea how people would react to them….but the response was wonderfuly positive and overwhelming! The pictures flew off the walls ! Only a few are left! Thankyou Jereme for encouraging me to do the exhibition and organising it all for me – i’m too fuzzy headed to have been able to do so. Women in particular were drawn to the pieces and did the majority of the buying, but quite a few men also bought them, often as gifts for female friends or partners ( or wife to be in one instance, as a wedding gift, which was beautifully touching, thankyou!). It was great to meet the people who took ownership of my little creations, as its not something that is always possible- I hope they continue to make you smile.
As now all my creative urges are being satisfied, I feel I have truly found my creative calling, and Drawing With Stitches will continue. Watch this space for future exhibitions, for pictures you may wish to buy (contact me !), or to just visit the site and watch how they progress!
Fret not old friends who love the bags, jewellry ( Ruby Trinket ) and other creations…I will still be making those too, and a new addition… art dolls, one of a kind (o.o.a.k ) original hand made dolls… and putting them on the site in a category of their own. I will also have a page especially for my ink art. Check out the different pages at the very top of this one to find the different categories…
If you need anything in particular just send me an e-mail and I will get right onto it!

oh Sam I am just stunned at your gorgeous art. Having spent 20 odd years ‘sewing ‘ for a living combining it with art I just wish I had time /energy now to do more [not like yours !! ][seeing I now have a superb machine as well as all my old ones.] gosh wish I could give you the boxes of fabrics and bits and bobs I have just languishing in cupboards.
[ps I had to give up due to illness] I can still paint in oils though. not so demanding] cheers Gini.
Hi Gini, thankyou so much for your lovely comment….i don’t get to sew on the machine as much as i would like either – due to illness too – but love it when i do! i looked up your art on red bubble…it’s gorgeous, you can tell by the wonderful use of colours and their textural qualities that you love fabrics and have had a lot to do with them! beautiful! Will go back and have another look now! thankyou , sam.
